Sherman Oaks Water Filtration System Installation
Over a Decade of Serving Greater Los Angeles Area Residents
Making sure that the water in your home is clean and safe to drink is a priority for any responsible homeowner - and the best way to do this is through treating your home’s water. By filtering out contaminants, bacteria, and other impurities, you can rest assured knowing that you're drinking pure, clear water. Additionally, a water softener can prevent plumbing problems associated with hard water, like limescale build-up or frequent clogs.
If you're considering adding these systems, our team at Sal Plumbing & Rooter, Inc. has you covered! We offer professional water treatment installation services so you don't have to worry about setting up these complex systems on your own.
What’s the Difference between a Water Softener and Water Filtration?
Water filtration and softening are two key processes used to purify household water, however they have distinct purposes. A water filter removes bacteria, sediment, and chemicals while a water softener is designed to specifically target calcium and magnesium that can cause buildup in appliances and plumbing.
Even though Los Angeles water meets safety standards, this doesn’t indicate it is healthy. In addition, the water is also very hard. Considering a water filter and/or a water softener you’re your home could be beneficial for Sherman Oaks residents. Water filtration can help rid drinking water of any potential contaminants while a water softener will reduce the negative effects of hard water on the running of appliances.

How Water Filtration Works
Water filters offer a convenient way of ensuring high standards of cleanliness in our drinking water. They come in many different types and can last anywhere from 15 to 25 years. Most of these systems work by trapping or converting contaminants such as particles, solids, and dissolved metals. Then, they remove the debris through the processes of regular backwashing cleaning cycles or media and cartridge replacements.
If your water has and odd taste, unpleasant smell, or is cloudy or discolored, having a water filtration system installed may be useful.
Examples of water filters include:
- Carbon filters: Also known as activated carbon filters, these types of water filters use adsorption to remove impurities from water. This works by trapping the impurities such as chlorine, pesticide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the sponge-like filter.
- Sediment filters: Designed to remove large particles such as sand, slit, and sediment out of water, these filters work by trapping particles in a fine filter.
- UV lamps: These devices work by destroying bacteria and viruses. UV lamps sterilize water by attacking the DNA of microbial contaminants with ultraviolet light.

How Water Softeners Work
Water softeners use salt and ion-exchange resins to remove calcium and magnesium from the water, which otherwise can cause scaling and plaque build-up in plumbing and appliances. Ion exchange is the most common method for mineral removal. With it, hard water minerals are replaced with soft ones such as sodium or potassium. The process works by passing the hard water through resin beads coated with the softening agent, ordinarily a sodium solution; as the hard water passes through them, its minerals are attracted to it and sodium ions released into the water instead.
If you have limescale buildup on faucets, dry skin, spots on glassware, and dingy clothes, it may be time to consider installing a water softener. These systems can last for about 10 to 15 years giving you better quality water for over a decade.
Types of water softeners include:
- Salt-based: These softeners remove hard water minerals using an ion exchange system.
- Salt-free: Mineralized crystals are detached from water.
- Dual-tank: One tank is a resin tank while the other is a brine tank. When sodium-covered resin beads in the resin tank is loaded with minerals, the brine tank will rinse and recharge them.
